Introducing Typography through Type Design

Over the past several semesters, Rob McConnell has been using typeface design in his typography course as a way to help students dive deep into what makes letters work. It’s been a constant balancing act between project length, outcomes, and student skill level. This presentation shares how and why McConnellcreated this project as well as some of the student outcomes with examples of their work. Through the process, McConnel found that students not only gain an appreciation for type and letters, but they gain a true understanding of what makes typography work at an atomic scale.
