Tong Xiegeng and the Puzzle Map of a Thousand Character

This presentation begins with a set of old books from Zhou Chen’s own collection, the Puzzle Map of a Thousand Character. He will talk about the life of Tong Xiegeng, a Qing dynasty man, and his invention of the Fifteen-Piece Puzzle, analyzing the features of the Puzzle Map of a Thousand Character that Xiegeng designed. Chen will conclude by discussing the link between the Puzzle Map of a Thousand Character and his own book design practice.

Zhou Chen

Zhou Chen is the professor of editorship and director of the Art Publishing Centre of Phoenix Education Publishing House, a member of the Illustration and Framing Art Committee of the China Art Association, and a standing member of the Book Design Art Committee of the China Print Association. His book designs took honors eleven times in “The Beauty of Books in China” and twice in “The Beauty of Books in the World” (2017 and 2019). Chen’s works have been honored by the ADC and the One Show, the D&AD Graphite Pencil Award 2019, and the Gold Award of the German Design Award 2020. He was awarded the Gold Medal at the Ninth National Book Design Exhibition and the Fourth and Fifth China Publishing Government Awards. Chen was a jury member for “The Beauty of Books in China” in 2015 and 2019.
