São Paulo Street Signs: A Look at a Mechanical Variable Font From 1915

Some of São Paulo’s street signage from 1915 to 1973 still exists in the city. The project presented will review the history of those signs and creating a variable font inspired by them.

Diego Maldonado is a Brazilian type designer at the foundry he created—Notdef Type—and a researcher of graphic design. Maldonado studied theory and history at the University of São Paulo with a focus on typography and editorial design.
