Futura®100: A Century of Futura®, A Global Future

Marking 100 years since the groundbreaking creation of Futura® through the collaboration between Paul Renner and the Bauersche Giesserei (nowadays Bauer Types), TypeTogether and Bauer Types have joined forces to craft a new, more accurate, and globally inclusive Futura® family. Embracing TypeTogether’s hallmark collaborative design philosophy, we assembled a worldwide team of designers, consultants, and technicians to work together in creating the most ambitious Futura® to date, fully leveraging modern technologies.

Spanning 23 writing systems, Futura®100 supports languages spoken by over 90% of the world’s population. Futura® has been to the moon and has traveled around the world, but until now it has not been able to speak many of the languages of India, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China… and many more. Fonts, situated at the crossroads of culture, communication, and functionality, transcend mere aesthetics. Their significance extends far beyond visual appeal, serving as indispensable tools that enable billions of people to communicate effectively. This project pushes the boundaries of how Futura®´s original geometric aesthetic and design intent can be thoughtfully adapted across different writing systems with cultural sensitivity.

Futura® is one of the most influential early geometric sans-serif typefaces, introducing a radically modern approach to type design based on clear, simple shapes and a deliberate rejection of unnecessary ornamentation. Almost a century later, Futura®100 carries this forward-looking spirit into a new global context. Its clarity and uncluttered design provide a shared visual language in which many different voices can find expression without overshadowing the message itself. By extending Futura® across 23 writing systems, Futura®100 embraces linguistic and cultural diversity while respecting the identity, structure, and traditions of each script — preparing Futura® for its second century as a truly global and inclusive typeface.

Veronika Burian

Veronika Burian born in Czech Republic, is a product and type designer running the international indie foundry TypeTogether with partner José Scaglione since 2006. She is one of the founding members of Alphabettes and was one of the mentorship organisers, is co-chairwoman of the GRANSHAN foundation, co-curator/organiser of TypeTech MeetUp, gives lectures and leads workshops at conferences and at universities around the world, and mentors new talents in type design.

Vivian Hartmann

Vivian Hartmann is CEO of Bauer Types and the fourth generation of the Hartmann family to lead the company that continues the typographic legacy of the historic Bauersche Giesserei and Fundición Tipográfica Neufville.

With a background in Economics and Business Administration, and an international professional career, Vivian combines a strategic business perspective with the responsibility of leading one of typography’s most significant historical legacies.

Since taking the lead at Bauer Types, she has focused on connecting this heritage with its future, strengthening the company’s international presence and developing new projects around Futura® and the wider Bauer typeface library.

As Futura® approaches its centenary in 2027, Vivian is leading Bauer Types’ Futura 100 initiative, a global programme celebrating one hundred years of one of the world’s most influential typefaces while looking ahead to its next century. The development of Futura®100 together with TypeTogether is a central part of this vision, extending Futura® across 23 writing systems and preparing it for a truly global future.
