Ways of doing: Teaching type design today

During the ATypI 2017 conference in Montréal, the Master Type Design at Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL) celebrated its first year of existence. The anniversary was an occasion to look back at the origins of the program, and at the questions raised by its creation. How should we define a pedagogy within the field of existing curriculums? How do we rely on Swiss local specificities? How should we think about type today, and, in particular, about the transmission of craft, technical, historical, and managerial knowledge in an academic environment? Viewed as a contribution to the discussion of type design education, this lecture turns on interrogations, choices, future improvements, doubts, and convictions.

Speaker

Matthieu Cortat

Matthieu Cortat is a type designer working on retail and custom fonts he distributes via the foundries Nonpareille and 205tf. Since 2016, he has been the Head of Master Type Design at ECAL, University of Art and Design Lausanne, Switzerland. Within this MA program, Cortat tries to develop a pedagogy fitted for the contemporary type design scene, reflecting on the evolutions of the society and the changes in design practice. This may include artificial intelligence (AI) in the near future. Cortat will bring his thoughts on the AIZI project, the first attempt at ECAL MATD to deal with these questions.
