Founded in 1640, the Imprimerie Nationale houses a unique collection of over 500,000 punches. Considered to be the oldest printing workshop in the world still in operation, the Imprimerie Nationale covers the entire typographic chain (design, engraving and fonts, composition and letterpress printing) and has been transmitting this know-how for several centuries.
During this one-day visit, you will discover the jewels of this collection: the historical library of 35,000 works, the punches of the Grecs du Roy by Claude Garamont, the engraved plates of the Romain du Roi, the thousands of Chinese ideograms of the Buis du Régent, engraved on wood, the historical typefaces of the Imprimerie nationale, but also its impressive collection of “oriental” typefaces, which covers 65 systems of writing, in 150 styles.
