Shows Open at BCEC: Fifty-Fifty | Hanyi Fonts and Typography | Newcastle Bins | Type Text Roots | Type Down Under

Check out the variety of exhibitions throughout the ATypI spaces at the Brisbane Conference and Convention Centre. These inspiring shows feature award-winning typeface design, experimental typography and graphic design of posters, found typography on neighborhood trash bins in Newcastle, sumptuous typography using fonts from Hanyi foundry, and ambigrams and mid-century modern furnishings from the land Down Under.

Agnieszka Ziemiszewska

Professor, PhD Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology

Agnieszka Ziemiszewska is a graphic designer, educator, and art curator. She designs posters, publications, visual identifications as well as social art projects. Agnieszka first built her career working as an independent designer creating visual identification systems. Currently, she focuses on experimental, non-commercial, educational and research projects. Agnieszka actively participates in international shows dedicated to graphic design and poster. Her works have been presented at exhibitions and events all over the world. Her works were also shown at solo exhibitions in South Korea, Hungary, Indonesia and Poland. Agnieszka has been awarded numerous distinctions and awards. She has also curated and co-organized multiple exhibitions in Poland and abroad. Agnieszka is a professor at the Faculty of the New Media Arts at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology in Warsaw, Poland. She also has lead a number of workshops and lectures at international events and universities. Agnieszka has been part of juries in national and international graphic design competitions. Crystian Cruz

Crystian Cruz is a Brazilian senior graphic designer, educator, and consultant in editorial design and typeface design. He holds a Master’s Degree in Typeface Design from Reading University, UK, and has worked as a part-time lecturer in Australian and Brazilian bachelor and postgraduate courses since 2003. For ten years, Cruz worked as a creative director of prominent magazines and newspapers in Brazil, including “GQ” magazine, and as type director at Africa, one of the most well-known advertising agencies in South America. More recently, Cruz’s design has been focused on branding, marketing, and short-term consultancies for advertising agencies and publishing houses. Cruz is vice president of the board of directors of ATypI and is currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Newcastle, Australia.

Nada Abdallah

Professor University of Sharjah

Nada Abdallah is the founder of Bilarabic Design Festival and Director of Meta.motif masterclasses and is an Assistant Professor in Visual Communication at the College of Fine Arts and Design, University of Sharjah. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Communication from the American University of Sharjah and an MFA from the Lebanese University. Abdallah began teaching in 2002 and taught design at the Higher Colleges of Technology, Lebanese University, and Lebanese International University. She is a Certified Arabic Calligrapher, which she obtained from the Master Calligrapher Mosaad Khodeir ElBorsaidi in Cairo, Egypt. Abdallah’s research and work focus on Arabic Calligraphy and mainly the Kufic Script. She has won several awards in design and held many exhibitions in Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, Greece, Korea, Jordan, Egypt, Bahrain, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the United States.

Tania Hearn

Tania Hearn is an Australian type designer and lettering artist from the Gold Coast, Australia. She creates kinetic typography, SVG and SBIX colour fonts, and tactile ambigrams. Tania studied design at Griffith University, going on to complete her Honours degree in type design at the University of Newcastle. Tania has been featured in Typism’s annual books. She teaches lettering workshops to pass on her tips and techniques, and cherishes any spare time sketching by hand. Tania is hosting her Type Down Under exhibition at Southbank Brisbane during the ATypI conference and invites letter lovers and puzzle pundits to come along and enjoy her colourful collection of brain-benders that challenge you to look at words in new ways.
