Industry Update: Adoption, Opportunities and Adventures Ahead

Recent years have seen a rapid expansion of digital media demanding new and complex type licensing models and delivery methods. Mobile apps, web services, digital ads, and others are all challenging foundries’ established business practices. Far from escaping the disruption begun by web fonts, the industry continues on a journey of trial and error, struggling to adapt to these emerging media and the millions of new users they create. Much more than cause for anxiety, these changes represent an opportunity for any foundry or designer to reach entirely new customers, provide improved experiences, and create a lucrative, sustainable type business. Adobe, Monotype and Google have each played a leading role in exploring new approaches to these disruptive changes in the type industry — through new delivery methods, licensing models, and ongoing engagement with designers and foundries of all sizes. By sharing their own statistics and insights from their efforts to support a beneficial type ecosystem, they will invite the type community to join them in a discussion to explore the state of the type business, and to find the most mutually rewarding, sustainable solutions in the face of these challenges.
