Give voice to type: Award-winning typefaces from the GRANSHAN Base Award

Give voice to type brings together the first-prize winners of the most recent edition of GRANSHAN’s international type design competition – thirteen editions since 2008, continuing today as the GRANSHAN Base Award – alongside all awarded Arabic typefaces, including the second-, third-, and special-prize recipients. The works are shown here for the first time since their presentation in Reading. Each gives a script its own contemporary voice; together, they reflect what GRANSHAN has stood for since 2008: the identity-forming power of scripts and typefaces beyond Latin, and their recognition and exchange worldwide.

GRANSHAN

GRANSHAN is an international project on the identity-forming power of scripts, typefaces and communication design beyond Latin. Active since 2008 and anchored today as an independent, non-profit organisation based in Munich, GRANSHAN runs two international competitions – the GRANSHAN Base Award for type design (thirteen editions since 2008, continuing seamlessly under this name and returning in 2027) and the GRANSHAN Bloom Award for communication design (first edition 2026; every submission is judged by people who actually read the script) – alongside a conference series of fifteen editions to date, ongoing physical and online exhibitions, and a newly emerging Discourse line, growing from the former Publications strand and opening with GRANSHAN ENCOUNTERS. The project operates as a community as much as an organisation, carried predominantly by voluntary commitment.
