Dirty business

Buying and selling fonts

A casual talk about the fundamentals of buying and selling fonts aimed at graphic design students, font developers, recent graduates, and those who use fonts regularly. It strives to raise awareness of the value of typography as a commodity, and proposes five practical ways to uncover the “font business” basis. The presentation will address the transformation of the type design business, starting at the Renaissance and reaching modern times. It will showcase how the exchange of goods went from a very tangible box filled with type sorts to an intangible digital file. Such a transformation has changed not only how things are sold and bought, but also how consumers relate to and understand what they are paying for. From deciding to purchase a digital font, to properly acquiring it and understanding exactly what you are getting, buying and selling fonts may seem too complex at the beginning, but it doesn’t not have to be dirty.
