This demo-lecture tests the role of calligraphic features like Arabic ligatures in reading performance, examined through the framework of disfluency theory. Current PhD design research investigates the typographic potential of ligatures on how different levels of visual complexity affect comprehension, reading speed, and the reader’s overall engagement with text. The research proposes that the desirable complexity varies by reading purpose and genres, suggesting a more nuanced model of legibility that blends visual literacy, reading habits, and context.
This demo first introduces the theoretical background and research framework, then proposes a practical legibility test to participants. They will be invited to engage in short reading tests containing varying degrees of ligature usage. Their performance will be assessed through a questionnaire on discussing the complexity of shapes. The test is designed to be short and targeted at native Arabic readers / Arabic type designers, or users.
The demo is designed to be brief and participant-friendly. The research procedures strictly follow ethical guidelines and data protection regulations. This data-driven experimental demo offers critical insight into how visual nuances within writing systems, when treated as deliberate design parameters, shape cognitive engagement.
