FiftyFifty Student Traveling Exhibition

FiftyFifty is a traveling lettering exhibition that aims to collect and showcase the work of college students worldwide. Supported by the University of Sharjah and endorsed by the Association Typographique Internationale, the project is an initiative of ATypI board vice president Nada Abdallah. FiftyFifty will premiere in Brisbane, Australia, during the ATypI conference (April 16–20, 2024). Selected work will also be included in a publication and promoted online.

Theme: Positive Synonyms

Humanity, love, care, understanding, and tolerance are not just desirable but essential qualities in our challenging times. Words are powerful. Our goal is to encourage students from different backgrounds to create uplifting reflective designs. At FiftyFifty we will combine the work into a multi-language mosaic of positivity, inspiring individuals to work towards a better world.

The Jurors

The jury is selected by FiftyFifty. Jury members will be acknowledged after competition judging is complete.

Entry Specifications

Create a 50x50cm black and white lettering poster using one word in any language/script that implies positivity. Manual or digital calligraphy, typography, and lettering designs are acceptable. Each file must be submitted in PDF format.

Students must submit original and unpublished artworks. Designs must be entirely the work of the student and may not include any copyrighted material. Each student may submit up to five different designs. A jury will select the strongest pieces for inclusion in the exhibition. Additionally, a catalog will be published, and the selected students will receive a digital copy.

Assignment of Rights

By submitting work, the student authorizes ATypI and FiftyFifty organizers to use the design, title, and authorship information for promotional and educational purposes. If a student’s work is selected by the jury, the student agrees to grant to ATypI and FiftyFifty a perpetual license for publication, promotion, etc. A student who submits a winning selection will maintain the right to display the work in their portfolio, on their website, social media channels, etc.
