Speaker Taurai Valerie Mtake
Taurai Valerie Mtake is a multi-award-winning graphic designer and type designer from Harare, Zimbabwe, currently based in Sweden. With a Master’s in Visual Communication from Konstfack University, her practice explores the intersections of African heritage, typography, and contemporary design. Her work focuses on preserving and reimagining indigenous visual systems, ensuring they are not reduced to mere decoration but celebrated as living knowledge for future generations.
Taurai has collaborated on projects spanning cultural preservation, brand strategy, and type design, including her award-winning typeface Madimi One commissioned by Google Fonts. She has received recognition from platforms such as Ung Svensk Form and continues to expand her research into Afrikan scripts, language, and identity.
Driven by the belief that design is a tool for empowerment, she brings a unique Pan-African perspective to global conversations on visual culture and innovation.
