The Bauhaus-legends and lies

Back scan: 20th Century: type stories

The image most of us have of “The Bauhaus” is mainly a result of a very successful ‘branding’ campaign. Walter Gropius, official founder of the school in Weimar, skillfully manipulated the media of the time, only allowing his desired picture to emerge. The realities were not always in tune with this image. Johannes Itten’s ‘Grundstudium’ (foundation course) is still used today at many, if not most, art and design schools around the world. What were the other ideas and what can we learn from them for teaching design today?

Jay Rutherford

Jay Rutherford, left-handed guitarist and typographer, teacher, researcher, and fighter of lost causes, was born in 1950 into a family of sign painters and opticians. Following in the footsteps of a copywriter/designer uncle ( black sheep of the family), he studied graphic design and visual communications, worked for other designers ( bad idea), operated his own studio (better idea), and now teaches at the Bauhaus University Weimar (best idea yet).
