Pist Protta is Denmark’s oldest existing art journal, published for the first time in 1981. The name is an alliterative coincidence, the result of a phonetic misunderstanding. Pist Protta was founded by young artists from Funen and Langeland. They lived together in an artists’ colony of sorts in Himmerland (Northern Jutland)—actually an abandoned farm where the rent was cheap. Most of them soon found better things to do than edit an art journal. But not Jesper Fabricius, Åse Eg Jørgensen and Jesper Rasmussen. Pist Protta has been published continuously for 44 years. And no two issues are alike. According to the three editors, “Pist Protta is not only to be about art, but to be art in its own right!” Over the years, more than 400 artists have contributed to Pist Protta, and a couple of dozen of them have also served as guest editors.
