The Monotype of today is quite a different entity than it has been over the course of more than a century, but its evolution has mirrored that of the overall place of typography in the world around us. However, this is not a discussion of Monotype history; rather, it is a look at where Monotype finds itself now, and how its business has adapted to meet the needs of a changing type ecosystem. To understand the scope and scale of the market today, we’ll look at what various data points can tell us about the company, its customers, and the many type foundries working with them.
With a little context, the available data provides a clear picture of how one company has adapted to meet customer needs, along with information about the value provided to other type foundries. The figures will provide a sense of scale for not just one company, but of the potential opportunities for other foundries and platforms to align themselves with the changing demands of the many organizations who are willing to invest in typography in today’s technological and media landscape.
