It was a joy and an honor to welcome the global type community to Copenhagen for ATypI 2025.
When ATypI first came to the city in 1973, Nicolete Gray offered a prescient observation about involuntary public reading – the typographic landscape of everyday life, from street signs to record sleeves. Her words echoed throughout this year’s conference as we reflected on how much that landscape has transformed. Today, our reading is largely digital, shaped by screen-based experiences and algorithmic curation. The materials may have changed, but our questions remain the same: How does typography shape what we see, how we read, and what we know?
This year’s theme, AI and Parametric Design in Typography, invited us to explore a new phase in type design – one where machine learning, generative tools, and responsive systems are redefining both the act of designing and the act of reading. Together, we examined these shifts through inspiring talks, rich conversations, and shared moments of reflection.
I would like to thank everyone who helped make this event possible – from my colleagues and the ATypI team, to the speakers, volunteers, and attendees who brought their knowledge, creativity, and curiosity to every session. Hosting you in Copenhagen was a privilege.
