Re: Calibrating Type

Following up on the previous year’s ATypI Tech Talks presentation, “Calibrating Type,” we explore the progress on our tooling to unfold the full potential of variable fonts that are based on parametric axes.

There are two approaching angles; one is detailed typography and layout decisions by the designer, informed by tools for exploring the design space. The other is low-level automated typesetting, informed by the formerly mentioned typographic decisions, user preferences, and premises defined by the environment (screen size, browser, etc.).

Since this year’s release of Roboto Flex by Google Fonts, access to parametric fonts has gotten easier. This tooling seeks to answer how to use such fonts efficiently and safely while improving typographic quality for the reader.
