Google Fonts delivers free, open-source fonts to billions of pages across the web. In recent years Google has improved the quality of this collection, and added support for more and more languages. In 2018 they explored, validated, and shipped a data-driven CSS-only solution for CJK fonts, starting with Korean. In this presentation, software engineer Evan Adams unpacks how Google leverages their web index data to intelligently partition fonts to reduce latency, and optimizes for transfer size, number of requests, and cross-site caching. Irin Kim will also reveal the development and impact of the Korean-fonts showcase website, googlefonts.github.io/korean.

Evan Adams
Evan Adams graduated with a Computer Science degree from Oregon State University and has worked at Google for the past 13 years. He worked on Google Slides, ensuring consistent line-breaking in the face of different browsers, OSs, font files, font-rendering engines, zoom levels, kerning, etc., for which a US patent was granted. Adams is currently part of the Google Fonts team. Google Fonts is “making the web more beautiful, fast, and open through great typography.” Delivering the desired fonts in a timely fashion is essential, and Adams has been focused on discovering the best strategies for delivering Korean fonts.

Irin Kim
Kim Irin is a visual designer in the Google Fonts team, based in New York City. She has focused on developing design systems and visual identities, and has contributed to UX/UI projects such as the Material Design guidelines, the SPAN design and technology conference, and surfacing variable fonts in Google Fonts (fonts.google.com). She recently led a project to add more Korean fonts to the Google Fonts library, and to showcase them she commissioned a website from local design studio Math Practice (googlefonts.github.io/korean) キム・イリンはニューヨークに拠点を置く、グーグルフォントチームのビジュアルデザイナー。彼女はデザインシステムとビジュアルアイデンティティの構築に携わり、またマテリアルデザインガイドライン、SPANデザイン＆テクノロジーカンファレンス等のUX/UIプロジェクトにも貢献し、グーグルフォント（fonts.google.com）を通してバリアブルフォントの世界にも足を踏み入れている。最近ではグーグルフォントに韓国語フォントを追加するプロジェクトに関わり、地元のデザインスタジオであるマス・プラクティスにその見本ウェブサイトの製作を依頼（googlefonts.github.io/korean）。
