There is no way around hand lettering these days. Because of social media,many people have found access to hand-drawn letters. This makes it harder for work to stand out. The popularity of lettering, however, is certainly not negative, as it creates a broader interest in both graphic and type design among the public. Letterers nowadays can be divided into different groups: artists with an illustrative background, or with graphic design influence, or type designers. Although I am educated as a graphic designer and have been working on lettering for a couple of years now, I felt the limitations of my lettering work. This is why I decided to follow a type design course, both to improve my skills and to experience the difference between lettering and type design. In early 2018 I traveled to Australia to take a hands-on Type Design course at the Old School New School for Design & Typography (OSNS). In this talk I will describe my experience of studying at the OSNS, where studying type design stimulated me to be a better letterer. I will discuss several lettering influences, which will explain how learning of different type or graphic designers and illustrators makes your work stand out.
