Quality Assurance (QA) of fonts is an increasing requirement for type designers, foundries, and font distributors. During the QA process, everyone has their workflows to help ensure that their fonts are in good condition. But all too often, they are fragmented and run on individual font files rather than on overall projects or may ignore some specific vendor requirements.
Font Bakery is a libre tool for QA that checks overall projects under different profiles to ensure that they meet both universal standards and specific vendor requirements. Its main goal is to gather knowledge around fonts to reduce dogmas—some of them long-sustained within the industry—and, in this way, to contribute with general knowledge as well as individual project quality.
This presentation aims for the audience to learn what Font Bakery is, how it can help save time by improving each person’s font production and publishing workflows, and how it is used at Google Fonts.
Font Bakery was initiated in 2013 to accelerate the onboarding process for Google Fonts. The project is developed with financial support from Google but is not an official Google product. Font Bakery now has an active community of contributors from independent foundries worldwide and from industry leaders such as Adobe Fonts, Dalton Maag, Microsoft, Fontwerk, Font Bureau, and others that have been key to keeping it updated to the latest standards.
