“Multiple color font formats were introduced in OpenType almost ten years ago, but none of the formats have been widely embraced and adopted because each one has trade-offs. Bitmaps provide rich presentation capabilities but lead to large font files. OT-SVG is a vector format with rich capabilities but leads to large font files and requires an SVG implementation. COLR v0 is an easy-to-implement vector format but has limited capabilities. This presentation by Peter Constable, Dominik Röttsches, and Rod Sheeter will introduce a proposed COLR version 1 format that aims to be a compact, rich vector format with full support for variations and tight integration into the font format.”
