Trends in European newspaper typography and design-the printed newspaper as navigation tool for the readers

Type and periodicals and WWW

The printed newspaper has the chance to be the main navigation tool for the users. The user has no overview about the 1V programme, he has no overview about senseful and senseless internet homepages, he has no overview over the cinema programme, he does not know what to do at the weekend. He has no overview about politics in his city, his region, his country, Europe and the world. The newspaper has the chance to be the lead and navigation media if it is clearly designed.
I will give an overview over the different trends in Europe’s newspaper landscape. Headline typefaces, mix of headline and body copy typefaces. I am organising the European Newspaper Award, a newspaper design competition. In the second competition, 221 newspapers from 21 countries participated. That gives a good overview.
