Speaker Satwinder Sehmi
Satwinder Sehmi is a calligrapher living in England with an international reputation. He is interested by the quality of the mark, the rhythms, tensions and textures ie the painterly quality created on the page or canvas.
Satwinder Sehmi was bom in Kenya and moved to England in 1969. He was drawn to fine writing, initially studied architecture, and then then worked in design and graphics where his then limited skills were further developed. His frustration at his lack of ability lead him to full time study under Ann Camp at Digby Stuart College, Roehampton, London.
Since graduating from Roehampton, Sehmi has been working for the design and advertis ing markets as well as using calligraphy as a medium to express emotions and feeling on paper. Working for the design and advertising markets, he is responsible for much packaging work as well as same of the many popular logotypes seen around. He has created many television and film titles, including much ‘on screen’ calligraphy for both media. He has used his calligraphic skills to create typefaces which are now being marketed worldwide by the International Typeface Corporation.
Sehmi is the author of ‘Calligraphy- The Rhythm of Writing’, a highly acclaimed teaching and reference book. He has taught workshops in France, Holland, Japan and the States. He is an elected member of “letter Exchange”, a body of professional lettering artists and was awarded Fellowship of Calligraphy and letter Arts Society.
