Exploring Emotional Perception in Devanagari Calligraphy: Letter Modulation Techniques, Tools, and Style Variations

Calligraphy, an art form practiced across scripts globally, is more than just aesthetic handwriting—it is a visual dialogue between the creator and the viewer. Within the Indian context, Devanagari calligraphy holds profound cultural and artistic significance, yet remains underexplored in academic literature compared to international scripts. This poster examines the concept of letter modulations in… Continue reading Exploring Emotional Perception in Devanagari Calligraphy: Letter Modulation Techniques, Tools, and Style Variations

The Analysis of Brush Strokes and the Pressure of the Pen of the Ming-Style of Penmanship

Hiragana in the Japanese Mincho font exists as a block script. The reason for this is that hiragana is derived from a cursive script that is a corruption of kanji. This research is a work that visualizes the strokes and pressure of the strokes in Mincho hiragana and investigates the reconstruction of the characters.

Kaithi and the Future of Multiscript Design

Kaithi (KAE-THEE), also known as Kayathi or Kayasthi, was once a widely used script in northern India but is now classified as “major extinct.” Flourishing alongside Devanagari and other major scripts, Kaithi played a significant role in administrative and literary contexts before fading from common use. Rooted in the Kayastha community—historically known as scribes—its revival… Continue reading Kaithi and the Future of Multiscript Design

A Study on the Change of Turkish Alphabet: Research on a Cultural Identity

The Turkish language underwent a profound transformation nearly a century ago with the transition from the Arabic script to a Latin-based Turkish alphabet. This shift was more than a simple exchange of letters; it encompassed grapholinguistic considerations, political and social contexts, economic factors, and the historical evolution of the Turkish language. Each of these elements… Continue reading A Study on the Change of Turkish Alphabet: Research on a Cultural Identity

The Interplay of Typography and Lettering

My final thesis at the masters education in Graphic Communication Design at The Royal Academy in Copenhagen is a typeface exploring the interplay of typography and lettering. With two opposites, two extremes (typographic and lettering) the typeface spans the classification of a text typeface and a display typeface. The type explores the interplay of typography… Continue reading The Interplay of Typography and Lettering

Who Do You Think You Are?

Athraitheach: changeable; changing; fluctuating; shifting; varying. Conceptually informed by, and materially embedded in, current technological developments in typeface design, this project, ‘Athraitheach: Who do you think you are?’, (a collaboration between Declan Behan, who designed the typeface, and Clare Bell’s PhD research, which informs this text and the project rationale) takes the form of a… Continue reading Who Do You Think You Are?

Inflection Points: Inclusion of Fundamental Typographic Principles in Design Curricula

In my experience, the common practice in undergraduate design curricula rarely explores the fundamentals of type design, instead focusing on generalized typographic principles, resulting in a lack of fulsome understanding behind the many standard rules. In response to this anecdotal state of affairs, in my approach as an educator I expose students to critical theories… Continue reading Inflection Points: Inclusion of Fundamental Typographic Principles in Design Curricula

Typography and Politics in Communist Romania 1948–1989

The research project Typography and Politics in Communist Romania, 1948–1989 refines its conclusions by exploring how typography was utilized by the political system during various periods of change. The quality of printed matter declined significantly, and the craftsmanship of typographers was reduced to the fine mechanics of printing. The study examines four key aspects of… Continue reading Typography and Politics in Communist Romania 1948–1989
