Problem: In today’s digital landscape, type designers, calligraphers, and lettering artists face a unique challenge—staying true to their craft while harnessing the power of technology to innovate their business.
Founded a decade ago, Typism has thrived in the digital age by serving as a vibrant online community for type and lettering enthusiasts and professionals worldwide. This presentation will explore the pivotal role that technology has played in shaping Typism’s evolution and sustaining its commitment to type and lettering excellence. We will journey through the milestones, achievements, and transformative moments in Typism’s history and highlight the innovative approaches taken to connect and engage the community, from online events to digital collaboration. At the heart of the Typism Community lies the Typism Books, a curated collection that has showcased the finest examples of the craft of type and lettering across the globe for over a decade. Typism also provides a platform for top-tier lettering artists to share their expertise and creative practice through workshops, online summits, conferences, and the Typism membership.
As well as the craft aspect, this presentation will examine the challenges designers face to turn their passion for letterforms into a business, drawing insights from Dominique Falla’s forthcoming book on “designpreneurship.” This session will reveal how technology has empowered designers to balance their craft with an entrepreneurial approach and adopt new business models in an ever-changing business landscape. This case study will illustrate how the intersection of craft and technology has allowed the Typism community to thrive, fostering connections and creativity on a global scale.
Conclusion: Technology has not only sustained but enhanced the craft of type and lettering. Typism’s ten-year journey demonstrates it is possible to bridge the past and present, tradition and innovation, and craftsmanship and entrepreneurship in the world of type and lettering.
