In the current digital era, reading has largely migrated from paper to screens. Despite this shift from paper-based to digital reading, our reading methods have evolved remarkably little. Text often remains static, leaving the dynamic and adaptive capabilities of digital devices un(der)utilized. At the Centre for Visibility Design (Royal Danish Academy), we explore how interactive reading interfaces can facilitate reading through dynamic interventions and real-time customization. In this symposium, we present three projects on interactive text adjustments aimed at enhancing reading:
- Line-by-Line Text Magnification: In this study, we demonstrate how real-time magnification of individual lines of text can make reading from screen more accessible on small devices (e.g., smartphones).
- Dynamic Word Highlighting: With a gaze-contingent paradigm, we tested whether dynamically coloring words as they are read promotes reading efficiency in beginner readers.
- Typeface Attributes and Communicative Tone: This study investigates how perceptions of typeface attributes, enabled by parametric font design, influence the communicative tone.
Through the combination of topics presented here, this symposium offers a glimpse into the future of personalized and adaptive reading for a variety of audiences.
