Font Proofer and Rethinking How We Test Type

Peter Nowell will demonstrate Font Proofer, share its evolution and upcoming features, and reflect on what he’s learned about the proofing process from hundreds of conversations with type designers.

Proofs are an essential part of the design and production process for every professional font—but making them is often time consuming, error prone, or dependent on custom Python scripts. It’s been this way for decades.

Font Proofer is changing that. The app integrates seamlessly with Glyphs and RoboFont, and allows you to quickly generate a variety of proofing layouts. Since its launch two years ago, Peter has been continuously refining it, adding powerful new features for a growing community of type designers and foundries. And he’s just getting started. In this talk, he’ll offer a preview of what’s next.

But a tool is not enough. Equally important is how we think about proofing. How can we maximize its usefulness and minimize the nuisance? Ultimately, how can we make better fonts that people love to use? Peter will share his reflections on these questions, informed by his insight into how type designers approach proofing today.
