Designmuseum Danmark: Exploring the Danish legacy of typographic design

Designmuseum Danmark opens the doors to its extensive archives for a special exploration of the Danish legacy of type and typographic design. The event opens with an introduction to Danish type design and its key practitioners, followed by a rare opportunity to examine original typographic sketches and artifacts, illuminating Denmark’s significant contributions to typography. Discover the stories behind iconic Danish type designs and their impact on visual culture, both nationally and internationally.

Following the introduction and archival visit, the museum’s library will showcase its rare and extensive collection of original publications by William Morris/Kelmscott Press, Walter Crane, and Charles Ricketts, alongside seminal typographic examples of Danish Skønvirke (equivalent to Art Nouveau and Jugend) and avant-garde publication designs.

After the event, visitors will have the opportunity to visit the museum’s general collection of Danish design, offering a chance to explore the broader scope of Denmark’s design heritage and its rich history and global impact.

Each session is limited to 10 participants and will be facilitated by Matthias Horneman-Thielcke, graphic designer and PhD Fellow at the Royal Danish Academy and Designmuseum Danmark and Sara Fruelund, Librarian at Designmuseum Danmark. Each tour lasts a maximum of 1.5 hours. Tours start at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00.

Atlant is a graphic design studio based in Copenhagen. We primarily work with typographic projects of all scales, ranging from books and publications to exhibitions, websites and identities.

Our approach is analytic and exploratory. Our process is iterative, designing through conversation between the involved parties. We are interested in visual culture, reflecting on typography and design history, working with content and context, form, materiality, and media.

Atlant is run by Stefan Thorsteinsson and Cecilie Nellemann, both graduates of Yale School of Art.
