ATypI Welcomes New Leadership
ATypI is pleased to announce that, during the June 30 Board meeting, Nada Abdallah (UAE) was unanimously elected as the new President of ATypI. At the same meeting Laurence Penney (UK) was elected as Vice President, again in a unanimous vote. Their election marks a confident and unified step forward for the organization.

Nada, who joined the Board in 2023, brings to the role extensive experience as a typographic researcher, educator, and cross-cultural design leader, with a strong commitment to global collaboration and inclusive governance. She has expressed a clear vision to strengthen ATypI’s presence in under-served regions, particularly across the Global South, emphasizing accessibility, academic engagement, and new models of inclusive participation.
Laurence also joined the Board in 2023. He has been engaged with ATypI for all of his professional life, attending his first ATypI conference back in 1994. His involvement with the technology, business and education sides of type give him insight into the needs of a wide range of stakeholders, that will help guide the organization into its next chapter.
Their unanimous election reflects the Board’s full confidence in their leadership and shared vision for ATypI’s future. Nada and Laurence are committed not only to successful conferences but developing programs to engage ATypI members throughout the year through a fully engaged Board.
The Board also acknowledges the contributions of former President Carima El-Behairy over her many years of service to the organization.
Together, Nada and Laurence are committed to leading ATypI with integrity, openness, and renewed purpose — as the organization prepares for its upcoming international conferences in Stanford and Sharjah.
Stay tuned for updates as ATypI enters this exciting new phase of growth, innovation, and global engagement.
