OpenType font development seminar – 9/24-9/25

Adobe and Microsoft are holding two days of training devoted to planning, creating and testing OpenType fonts. There will not be computers provided, so bring your own laptop if you want to have hands-on work for these sessions. The program is as follows:

The Art of Letterpress Workshop – 9/24-9/25
The Emily Carr Institute will be hosting a two-day, hands-on letterpress workshop for a 6-7 participants (fewer than reported originally), to be taught by Jim Rimmer.
Learn the traditional craft of letterpress typography in an intimate, hands-on setting. This course provides a tactile typographic playground where you experiment with wood and metal type to create proofs of simple words and phrases (rather than whole poems or essays, which are too time-consuming). Two Vandercook flatbed proofing presses and two small table presses enable several people to print at once. Though an introduction to letterpress, this course will also be suitable for those with some previous experience who are looking for fresh inspiration. Enrollment is limited, so register early!
Jim Rimmer is an internationally-known type designer and typographer whose Albertan family is among his best-known designs. He has also designed and produced several hot metal typefaces and runs his own small press (The Pie Tree Press & Type Foundry), where he publishes limited-edition books. Jim has long taught typography and letterpress printing in local colleges, and his mentorship of young typographers is legendary.
This workshop will be held in the letterpress studio at the Emily Carr facility on Granville Island. $250 per person, all proceeds going to the Emily Carr Institute.
FontLab Workshop on OpenType tools – 9/25

FontLab has assembled this one-day program responding to designer/technician requests for specific training. This is a one-day workshop on Thursday, September 25th.

Gala Dinner sponsored by Linotype Library
The traditional ATypI Gala Dinner, a full evening-long event, will be held on Saturday night, September 27th at Bridges Restaurant (www.bridgesrestaurant.com) within walking distance of the Emily Carr Institute on Granville Island. Price includes dinner, entertainment and unlimited beer and wine for $75. A beautiful restaurant with a fabulous view of the bridge, the bay, and the mountains!
ATypI Auction
The annual Auction will be held at the Emily Carr Institute on Friday evening between 5:30 and 8:00, with wine & small nibbles to hold everyone over until dinner. Don’t miss this amusing event, where you can get interesting typographic things donated by members, and help support ATypI!
Lab Room
The Emily Carr Institute has a large computer studio that will be the home of the daily newspaper, and where there will be internet access and terminals to work on.
