Clare Carey

Information designer, typographer

I am not a type designer or a type technician but I love type and use it every day.

I studied typography/design at Stafford College in the UK where I was taught by the likes of Graham Stevens, Ann Pillar, Peter Burnhill and Tim Donaldson. I later studied at The Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading.

I started working in 1996 as a corporate identity designer at Lloyds Register of Shipping, then joined Text Matters as an information designer in 1997 and since 2002 I have been working at Boag Associates in London.

Royal Mail Instant guide to postal services: through research we came up with a new format based on accessing information and desk sizes.

As an information designer well designed type is an essential part of clear information design (so thank you type designers!). I like to design good looking stylish documents that are easy to use, read and understand. Typical projects include; web design & structure, forms/invoices, books and complex information including tables & diagrams.

Outside work I am particularly interested in photography, experimenting with stone and chisels or anything that gives me the opportunity to be in a creative environment away from my computer. At the Rome 2002 ATypI conference I felt privileged and thoroughly enjoyed watching the stone cutting masters showing off their different techniques.

I'm still learning!

This is also my opportunity to apologize for my part in the rough and ready ATypI newsletters over the past few conferences (97, 99-02)! During the conferences, as well as working, I have had great fun and met some very interesting and talented people.
